Students will be involved in training dogs to detect specific odors (narcotics and accelerants) used for law enforcement. Scent Detection for other odors teaches dogs to use their noses and can be a fun activity for owners and their dogs. You will be able to teach Scent Detection classes to your customers through private lessons or group classes.
Students must learn how to test and select a dog for scent detection, and will learn how to train using aggressive and passive responses.
Professional Trainer Program students will begin scent detection training, however, 6 weeks does not allow time to finish a dog for law enforcement.
Master Trainer Program students will participate in a scent detection certification which involves finding a specific scent in an undisclosed location.
For scent detection training, students must select and bring a dog solely for the purpose of scent detection. Prior to the class, we will provide the student with information about how to test and select a dog capable of doing scent detection.
Alternately, the student may choose to purchase a 'green dog' from Southern Star Ranch. A green dog is one that has been tested and determined to have the capability to do detection work.
